Camping at Leithfield Beach

1939-1940

Our annual family camp site at Leithfield Beach where we stayed 6 weeks. The Rugby car with rug covering the tyre for sun protection and our new caravan of which we were very proud. Note how we always wore sun hats. Also note the thermette for boiling water. Dad took the photo of mum, my older sister 10 and me 4.

Judges' comment: Camping is such a New Zealand tradition and this image from 1939/1940 captures it all. It's delightful and from the way the photograph has been framed you can feel the families pride in their Caravan, car and the ubiquitous thermette It has been suggested in a response to a question on the New Zealand genealogy list New Zealand L, that "the car is a Buick Roadster approx 1927 and may be the "Standard six" model.... The painted line along the side, the chrome rimmed painted headlights and radiator frame shape are the telltale signs..."
