Shenley Orchard was the first commercial orchard in Canterbury and probably the first of its kind in the country. Ian's grandfather, Edward Clarke, purchased 5 hectares of the original 140ha from John Stanley's son when they subdivided the farm in to 5 holdings in 1917 and the Clarke family had owned the orchard for more than 70 years. In 1917 only 2 of the 5 ha were used as an orchard. By 1988 Ian Clarke had about 1000 fruit trees to farm mostly apples and pears.
