Residential Red Zone living - complete with moat
Residential Red Zone living - complete with moat
In the residential Red Zone, thawing snow from mid-August 2011 blizzard combined with a total lack of stormwater drainage after the quakes to create some interesting challenges. Layers of liquefaction meant ground absorption capacity was almost nil, and all drains were completely clogged with silt, so rainwater + melted snow caused serious flooding issues. This view is from front door of my flat at 58A Keller Street, looking out to shared driveway & completely surrounded by a lake up to 50cm deep (nearly overflowed the house's foundations). In the end, my dad helped me build a DIY bridge out of salvaged wooden pallets - used it until the lake finally slowly drained & evaporated away!
