Thank-you for the photo showing the site of the Porters Pass Hotel. It is however wrong. I have done ground distance calculations, compass bearings and have cited six known images and have cross referenced everything I can think of and ironically where this photo was taken from, is almost on top of the original hotel building position. The old road-mans hut is not showing on a 1943 aerial photo seen on the Retrolens website. It has been moved here from elsewhere. The only thing that can prove the hotel's position is the remaining stone-footprint of the western stable building that stood behind and to the west of the hotel site in 1943. It matches the wall layout in a stunning photograph of the mid 1870's available on Recollections West Coast. It can still be seen faintly in a 1966 aerial shot. All of the tall trees were planted in the 60's for creek flooding control, bar the lone Monterey pine.
