This is my brother Enoka’s haircutting held in St Paul’s Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Hall on the corner of Cashel / Madras Streets. He was 15 years and this is a ceremony to signify his transition from boy to man. It is a Samoan tradition but celebrated around the Pacific. Funnily he got his first girlfriend within days of cutting his hair.

Dancing at St Pauls Church hall

Circa 1979

Rangi Oberg and her sister Puretu started a Cook Island Dance group in Christchurch comprised of their daughters and extended family. Most of the dancers were New Zealand born and taught to dance from a young age. The group ran from 1976 until 1982 and performed at formal and social occasions. The young dancers from left to right are Michelle Oberg, Tanya McGregor and Deborah Maoate dancing at St Pauls Church Hall in Cashel Street.
